Course Outline:

Avoiding Stress and Burnout with Mindfulness, Resilience and Self-Hypnosis

(* 6 CPD credits)

Stress can occur at any point in any clinician’s career from training posts through to consultant level. This unique, interactive course introduces some theory, but the focus is very much on the practical steps you can take to look after yourself including mindfulness and self-hypnosis exercises. The facilitator John Gilbert is a Graduate Psychologist and Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist and has over 10 years’ experience of working with doctors on an individual basis who face personal and professional challenges including stress.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to;

1. Identify the causes of stress and list the symptoms and recognise symptoms of stress in themselves and in others and describe the effects of stress on individuals and organisations

2. Complete a mindfulness questionnaire and recognise how mindful they are

3. List the characteristics of mindful and explain the benefits of practising mindfulness and participate in a group exercise and demonstrate the “following the breath” technique

4. Ccomplete a resilience questionnaire and identify how resilient they are and list the characteristics of resilient people

5. Describe ways to develop their resilience and identify the factors which can undermine this

6. Explain the rationale for using self-hypnosis ; describe the process of self-hypnosis and participate in a guided self-hypnosis session.

Programme:
09:00: Welcome, registration and coffee.
9:30: The causes and symptoms of stress and burnout . Group exercise
10:00: Social and biological sources of stress. The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) model. How to recognise symptoms of stress in self and in others. Effects of stress on individuals and organisations. Stress personality assessment and burnout questionnaires: AB Index and PB Index. Stress in organisations.

10:45: Refreshment break.

11:00: Characteristics of mindful and resilient people. Group exercise. Mindfulness questionnaire – how mindful are you now?
11:30: The need for mindfulness – ‘The Negativity bias’ – Type 1 & 2 errors and why all anxiety is anticipatory. Mindfulness trains us to come back to the present, out of the negative thought-stream and increases ability to accept that which cannot be changed. Therapeutic mindfulness – ‘Following the breath’ mindfulness group exercise.

12:00: Lunch break.

13:00: Developing resilience. Resilience questionnaire – how resilient are you now?
10 Characteristics of resilient people:

  1. Sense of purpose.
  2. Positive attitude.
  3. Flexibility.
  4. Openness.
  5. Accountability.
  6. Ability to manage stress.
  7. Confidence.
  8. Willingness to take risks.
  9. Physical wellbeing.
  10. Ability to learn from mistakes.

1:30: 12 strategies to develop your resilience and address the common factors undermining it. Adversity + Positive psychology = Resilience (Seligman 1990)

14:00:  Refreshment break.

14:15: Self-hypnosis Hypnosis – literal definition from the Greek ‘Hypnos’ meaning ‘Sleep’.
Rationale for using:

  1. Suggestions.
  2. Beliefs.
  3. Attitudes.
  4. Behaviours.
  5. Feelings.
  6. Outcome.

The process of self-hypnosis and the power of the subconscious mind: 1. Intake. 2. Induction. 3. Deepening.  4. Therapy. 5. Suggestion.  6. Revival.  7. De-brief.
14:45: Group exercise – Guided, practical self-hypnosis.

15:30: Question & answer session, reflection, summary and close at 16:00 / 16:30.

The fee for this course is £199:00; there is the option to make a 20% deposit to secure your booking and pay the balance no later than 8 weeks prior to the course date. Please note this deposit is non-refundable should you be unable to take up your place.
